SENIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1
Athy were the only team to beat Moorefield in the league last year and with both teams having a great league campaign to date, this was expected to be a very entertaining game and an entertaining game is what the supporters got. Moorefield’s Kevin Murnaghan opened the scoring in the 2nd minute with a point from play after a great ball from Kevin O’Neill. Athy levelled the game in the 10th minute when half forward Corey Moore kicked a good point from play after good work from Adrian Kelly. Athy took the lead a minute later with a point from midfielder Ross Bell. Philie Wolfe levelled the game in the 14th minute when he hit a great point after excellent work from Kevin Murnaghan who combined with corner forward Aaron Mullins who sent in the ball to Wolfe. Athy replied instantly with three points in three minute to go into a three point lead. The first coming from Shane O’Brien who made a good run from the half back line to knock over the point, and Corey Moore and full forward James Eaton kicking excellent points from play. Aaron Mullins reduced the deficit to two points in the 20th minute when he pointed from play a move that started with Philie Wolfe and involved Frank Hanniffy and Gareth Duffy but Athy replied once again with a superb point from James Eaton. Moorefield responded with points from Gareth Duffy and Keith Duane and Frank Hanniffy levelled the game in the 26th minute with a brilliant point from play after been set up by centre half forward Philie Wolfe. Athy finished the first half the strongest with points from Corey Moore and Liam McGovern to leave a half time score of 0-08 to 0-06.
Keith Duane got the Moore’s off to a good start in the second half when he kicked a great point in the opening minute. Philie Wolfe levelled the game when he pointed from a free in the 7th minute but Athy replied with a point from Adrian Kelly to put them in the lead once again. Keith Duane hit another excellent point from play to level the game after good work from substitutes Niall Hurley Lynch and Ger Naughton. Moorefield upped a level after this score and started to dominate the game with Gareth Duffy, Keith Duane and Philie Wolfe pointing for Moorefield to put them into a three point lead. Liam McGovern pointed from a free in the 18th minute to reduce the deficit to two points. Both teams were playing some excellent football throughout the second half but Moorefield’s experience and fitness stood to them in the final ten minutes of the game. Full forward Jason Philips hit two superb points in the 26th and 27th minute to put the Moore’s four points clear. Philie Wolfe kicked his fourth point of the game in the 30th minute after excellent defensive work from James Lonergan and Niall Hurley Lynch hit a fine point from play after a great ball from Kevin Murnaghan to put them in a comfortable six point lead. James Eaton point from a free in the last minute of the game for Athy to leave a full time score of 0-16 to 0-11 in favour of Moorefield.
