Moorefield got off to a winning start in the league with a victory over a very good Johnstownbridge team on Saturday. Ciaran Kelly opened the scoring in the 8th minute for the Moore’s followed by an excellent point from full forward Philie Wolfe. Keith Duane kicked the Moore’s third point in the 14th minute after a great ball from Kevin O’Neill in midfield. Both teams were playing very well and Johnstownbridge had a number of scoring chances but failed to raise the white flag. Frank Hanniffy kicked a great point from play for the Moore’s in the 17th minute a move that started from Ger Naughton in full back who made a great catch in the full back line and made a great pass to Padraig O’Flynn who supplied Hanniffy for the point. Johnstownbridge replied instantly with a point from midfielder Sean Hurley.  Ciaran Kelly kicked his second point in the 20th minute with a great point after good ball from Liam Callaghan. Kevin Murnaghan hit a fine point from play for Moorefield in the 22nd minute before Philie Wolfe kicked the Moore’s last two points in the first half, one from a free and the second was a well worked score after a great pass from Ciaran Kelly. Johnstownbridge hit two excellent points from play coming from their midfielders Sean Hurley and Padraig Hurley to leave a half time score of 0-08 to 0-03.

Johnstownbridge got off to a flying start in the second half when corner forward Wayne Leonard scored a great goal within the first minute to leave two points between the teams. This gave Johnstownbridge a big confidence boost and Sean Hurley reduced the deficit to a point when he pointed from a free in the 4th minute. Philie Wolfe kicked another two excellent points for the Moore’s in the 7th & 9th minute after excellent work from Ciaran Kelly, Barry Dempsey and Aaron Mullins. Johnstownbridge replied with a point from Michael Donnelly who made a great run from the half back line to knock over the point. Sean Hurley reduced the deficit to a point once again when he pointed from a free and he levelled the game a minute later with another good point. Corner forward Cathal McNally put Johnstownbridge in the lead for the first time in the game in the 15th minute with a great point after good work from Liam Holten and Eoin O’Donohoe and it now looked as if anyone could win this game. Frank Hanniffy levelled the game two minutes later when he pointed from a free and Ciaran Kelly hit his third point of the game in the 20th minute after a great ball from Padraig O’Flynn to put the Moore’s back in the lead. Philie Wolfe kicked his final point of the game in the 28th minute with another brilliant point after a great ball from Aaron Mullins. Kevin Murnaghan had a great goal chance saved by goal keeper Ian Farrell but a minute later he found the back of the net with a superb goal after a good ball from substitute Jason Philips to give the Moore’s the five point victory.

Best for Moorefield: Padraig O’Flynn, James Lonergan, Ciaran Kelly, Aaron Mullins and Philie Wolfe.

Best for Johnstownbridge: Sean Hurley, Michael Donnelly, Wayne Leonard and Padraig Hurley.
